Dell recalls 4.1 million batteries

Better late than never. After a series of incidents of Dell laptops going kaboom, they have announced a recall of 4.1 million Sony make batteries. This is the biggest recall ever made by Dell and the faulty batteries were shipped to customers between April 1, 2004 to July 18, 2006. The affected batteries were shipped with models mentioned below:
Latitude: D410, D500, D505, D510, D520, D600, D610, D620, D800, D810
Inspiron: 500M, 510M, 600M, 700M, 710M, 6000, 6400, 8500, 8600, 9100, 9200, 9300, 9400, E1505, E1705
Precision: M20, M60, M70, M90
XPS: XPS, XPS Gen2, XPS M170, XPS M1710

[...] Dell yesterday announced a massive recall of the faulty Sony batteries. This is one of the major recalls in the consumer electronics history which will cost Dell around $200-$300 million. Now the consumer safety officials reckon that other laptops which use Sony batteries could also be affected. Thus, a review has been initiated. Manufacturers like Apple, Lenovo, HP use the Sony battery. Apple said that they were looking into this matter while HP denied it completely saying It’s a Dell issue. The recent Dell recall had created a spark and led manufacturers like Apple, Lenovo and HP to decide whether Sony batteries were safe enough. Apple is the second company to recall Sony batteries and the release suggests that batteries were used to manufacture 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook G4 and 15-inch PowerBook G4 between October 2003 through August 2006. Though Panasonic claims that their recall is different from that of Sony and is taking a precautionary measure. 6000 battery packs are being recalled which were shipped with CF-W4G Let’s Note W4 notebooks in April and May of 2005. The problems arise if the owner sometimes drops the machine or sets it down on a table very roughly, said Akira Kadota, a spokesman for the company in Tokyo.
